Open your bank account before you travel

You don't need to wait until you're standing in Australia to have an active bank account. Several major banks let you start the process online from abroad, so the account and card are waiting for you when you land.

Some banks let you apply online from your home country
Which bank is best for someone who just arrived?

NAB is a solid base: $0 monthly fee with no conditions. Commonwealth Bank (CBA) has the country's most extensive ATM network. ING charges no fees if you deposit at least $1,000/month.

What do I need to open the account?

Passport, your visa (or application number if it hasn't been approved yet), and eventually an Australian address — some banks only ask for that when you pick up the physical card.

Can I use the account without a TFN yet?

Yes, you can open the account and start using it without a TFN. The difference is that until you add it, the bank withholds a higher percentage of tax on any interest you earn.

Does the card arrive in my country or do I pick it up in Australia?

It depends on the bank: some send it to a branch for you to collect on arrival, showing your passport. Confirm the exact process with your chosen bank before travelling.
